Revisiting Daily UI in 2023: Reflections & a new approach
I’ve decided to give this a crack again but I wanted to post a little update on how I’m changing my approach. My past critique of design challenges is that they exist in a vacuum, and the limitations of the dribble-focused format of the original DailyUI aren’t great for showcasing what you’re really capable of. So, I’m going to start where I left off, but set myself new parameters:
- Skip the BS – I won’t be making UIs or taking challenges that are just a box-ticking exercise. We all know that real world design needs to be outcome driven, takes advantage of design systems and native platforms – and I won’t be adding artificial limits unless I’m on to something really cool.
- Designs in motion – the original format limits you to a snackable thumbnail and isn’t great for showcasing flows or dynamic components. While I don’t have access to great options for dynamic prototypes right now, I’ll be trying to show flows and transformations where I can.
- Mobile-first – Desktop UI is still the workhorse platform for many businesses, but it can be a lot to take in. I’ll be using the mobile format as the default, and expanding to full screens where it makes sense.
